PHOTO GALLERY: Guitarist Jon Miller hosts Bluegrass Bingo Saturday mornings at The Joint

Feed the Dog guitarist Jon Miller started up Bluegrass Bingo(/Brunch) at The Joint in Minneapolis last Saturday morning.

It went well.

Below, check out a photo gallery from last week, with images of Miller, banjoist Mike Hedding (Kind Country), fiddler Rachel Calvert (Triple Fiddle, Barbaro) and mandolinist Nate Baker.

Bluegrass Bingo will be happening Saturday mornings at the long-time bar attached to the Cabooze.

The bar’s brunch menu is available starting at 10 a.m. and bingo runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., with Miller and friends performing from a list north of 50 bluegrass songs.

It’s free to play and easy to follow along (you can show up late, grab a card and scratch off any songs that have already been played on your game card) and there are prizes in the form of Joint gear, gift cards and Cabooze concert tickets.

There are a few rules, like only one card per player, but the one you really want to mind is in regards to false bingos. Miller sounded serious when he said those calling bingo falsely have to buy a round of drinks for the entire bar.

This week, he will be joined by a few of his bandmates in the mostly inactive Ginstrings.

That includes multi-instrumentalist Eli Bentley, who has been playing the second and fourth Thursday at The Joint (see the residency section of my calendar for details), upright bassist Matt Blake, and mandolinist Gavin Haskin of Brotherhood of Birds.

The Ginstrings were/are a Minneapolis-based Americana-folk-bluegrrass band that wrote some great songs. They haven’t been playing much at all in recent years but just this week were added to Blue Ox Music Festival’s lineup. They’ll be playing the Backwoods stage during the day, according to the Eau Claire, Wis.-based festival.
