You might not have heard of Etran de L’Äir, but they are a legendary psychedelic rock band from Niger. They’re actually a family collective of musicians that formed in 1995.
Etran de L’Äir, which translates to “stars of the air,” is bringing their form of “desert blues” to St. Paul’s Turf Club on Wednesday.

They aren’t the only psychedelic rock band visiting St. Paul this week. Australia’s Hiatus Kaiyote is playing the Palace Theatre on Friday.
Grace Potter has a pair of shows in the area, first with Mae Simpson opening for them at Earth Rider Festival Grounds, in Superior, Wis., (the site of last year’s Twin Ports Music Festival) on Thursday, and then at Utepils Brewing in Minneapolis Friday, with Nathan Graham in support.
Local bands Jon Sullivan Band and Twine share a bill at Icehouse on Friday.
Icehouse hosts Brotherhood of Birds’ album release party on Saturday. Annie Frazier, Qlivia and Will Effertz also share the bill.
Andrew Bird and Nickel Creek play at Surly Brewing Festival Field on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Rhythm of the River Festival in Jackson, has Jon Sullivan Band, Katy Guillen & The Drive and The Foxgloves, among others Saturday.
Nordic Brewpub in Monticello has the Nordic Bluegrass & Folk Music Festival with Pert Near Sandstone and Charlie Parr the top names on the bill.
Looking ahead, I’ll mention the Burnstone Music Festival, which my friend Dusty Kellin is putting on (pert) near Sandstone Aug. 9-11. It’s a pretty amazing lineup of local bands, including Babie Eyes, Saltydog, Feed the Dog, Twine, and Wonder Funk, among others.
I’ll note that MonoNeon, the colorfully clothed bass player who played with Prince, has a show on Saturday, July 27; Saltydog also has a gig at Icehouse that night, and my current plans are to head over to Icehouse after seeing MonoNeon perform.
Ghost Funk Orchestra is playing the Green Room Aug. 13.
And Mikel Wright & The Wrongs just announced a show at Bunkers on Aug. 24.
