Only Every Monday, a pretty consistent Monday night residency that has moved around to several locations, tops Jam in the Stream’s Minnesota live music picks this week.
Tonight’s show at The Green Room in Minneapolis’ Uptown is the 700th in the series.
Only Every Monday is the work of Geoffrey Fischbein, who manages to keep a rotating cast of musicians to perform every week.
There’s a short list of Minnesota-based musicians he hasn’t been able to participate, he told me in a recent conversation. Meaning, he’s had hundreds of different musicians appear over the years, even if they made only a one-time appearance. Others, such Feed the Dog guitarist Jon Miller, appear regularly.
The most recent home of the series was the patio at the Cabooze, a spot the series is likely to return to when the weather allows.
Tonight’s show at The Green Room is the first at the venue since last year.
The music starts at 7 p.m. tonight, with Artificial Flowers, Fat C, a trio of players from TWINE (including Will Effertz, Scott Yonke and Brian “Snowman” Powers), Emmy Woods and Fischbein.
Otherwise, the full TWINE lineup returns to Bunker’s Wednesday night after taking a two-week break from the weekly residency for the Holidays.
The Cactus Blossoms kick off their January residency at the Turf Club tonight. It’s sold out, but there are tickets available for upcoming Mondays (and there’s always the resale market and CashorTrade).
Friday is a busy night of music in Minneapolis.
G. Love and the Special Sauce plays First Avenue that night; locals Kung Fu Hippies cover the Grateful Dead at the Parkway Theater in Minneapolis, Alex Rossi’s band plays Bunker’s, rapper Sean Anonymous has his birthday party at 7th Street Entry (with a backing band that includes our jam mainstays keyboardist Kevin Dorsey and bassist Nick Spielman), and there’s an acoustic David Bowie tribute show at The Hook and Ladder Theater.
Saturday’s best option is Chase & Ovation, the Prince tribute band at Bunker’s.
On Sunday, Icehouse has its monthly Grateful Dead brunch starting at 11 a.m. with multi-instrumentalist Martin Dosh, drummer JT Bates, guitarist Javier Trejo and keyboardist Kevin Dorsey, among others in the lineup.
Charlie Parr also has the second of his January Turf Club residency shows, which is probably sold out by now.
As always, keep up to date with live music options around Minnesota at my calendar, updated weekly. Find it here. It is isn’t fully comprehensive, but if it’s psychedelic, and/or improvisational, it’s likely on my radar. It also includes ticket and information links to all the shows listed here.
