Frogleg’s headlining gig Saturday at The Hook and Ladder Theater was a special night.
Apocalypse Girlfriend opened the event and “crushed harmonies,” just as Demitri Rallis, Frogleg’s guitarist, had promised.
But New Salty Dog, the young jamband from up Duluth-way, delivered a high-energy set of jams before handing things off to Frogleg.
Frogleg debuted a new song, “Back Down to Earth.”
They also brought New Salty guitarists Sam “Samtana” Deters and Jacob Mahon up onstage separately in back-to-back songs, a pair of obscure Cymande covers that have long been in Frogleg’s rotation.
It was kind of perfect, with Mahon being embraced as he stepped onstage by Frogleg’s new addition, Brian “Snowman” Powers, who has breathed a lot of positive energy and life into Minneapolis’ music scene. Mahon said the occasion, sharing a bill and stage with Frogleg, meant a whole lot to him.
It was a perfect night of music for jam fans in Minneapolis on a weekend full of great jams every dang night.
